Alfred Received Paul Revere Award for ‘Joni Mitchell: Complete So Far’

Christian Wissmuller • Upfront • June 29, 2014

Alfred Music received the Paul Revere Award for Graphic Excellence in the category of “Book Design in Popular Folios” for the recently released songbook, Joni Mitchell: Complete So Far. This ceremony is held annually during the yearly meeting of the Music Publishers Association in New York City, New York.

“It is such an honor for this songbook to be recognized by our respected friends and colleagues,” said Aaron Stang, the book’s long-time editor. “This was such a special project for our team and we are so pleased with the finished product. I need to give credit to the book’s graphic designer, Dana D’Elia, who  designed the cover and interior art layouts for this songbook—I am thrilled that her hard work has been recognized by her peers. And, of course, this award is dedicated to the artist who spent a lifetime creating music that will be enjoyed for generations, Joni Mitchell.”

Joni Mitchell: Complete So Far features a cover image from Jack Robinson and includes over 40 classic images from the legendary classic rock-era photographer Henry Diltz.  The book also incorporates an incisive foreword on her unique guitar style, and a one-of-a-kind extensively cross-referenced Tuning Index for those in search of a deeper understanding of her approach to guitar.

This collectible hardcover 512 page book features 167 songs drawn from Joni’s 18 landmark studio albums. The songs and lyrics are transcribed accurately and include Joni’s critical guitar tunings, with more than 40 cataloged in the book. Joni’s guitar tunings have seduced and mystified her guitar fans for well over 40 years. This book shows how to play her songs with her unique tunings and chord fingerings. With the help of those tunings and fingerings, these highly harmonically complex songs suddenly fall naturally on the guitar. As Joni says, “If you think my chord fingerings are difficult then you’re probably playing them wrong.”
