Got a spare $900K?

Ronnie Dungan • MMR Global • June 5, 2015

The acoustic guitar John Lennon played on many of The Beatles’ early hits is expected to fetch more than $900,000 (£600,000) when it goes up for auction in California this November.

The Gibson J-160E acoustic, bought by Lennon in Liverpool, went missing in 1963 during the Beatles’ Finsbury Park Christmas Show, and turned up 50 years later, in a US junk shop and was bought by John McCaw.

Darren Julien, owner of Julien’s Auctions, which is handling the sale, called the guitar “one of biggest finds in music history,” and said the price could top the $965,000 (£630k) auction record set in 2013 for Bob Dylan’s Fender strat which he ‘went electric’ with at the 1965 Newport Jazz Fesitval.

“John Lennon items don’t come up very often because a lot of people keep them. This was one of his favourite guitars, he talked about wishing he still had it,” added Julien.
