SOCIAL MEDIA 101: Keep it current

If you’re wondering how to improve your Twitter and Facebook engagement, one simple way is to connect your posts to current events.

That doesn’t mean making crass connections with humanitarian disasters in the news but you can tailor your content according to things such as holidays, special events, or even quirkier stuff going on.

You have to know what your audience will engage with, of course, but it’s pretty safe to say that you will get an uplift connecting with things such as Christmas or Easter (NB: Other religious holidays are available) or special events such as the World Cup, the Olympics or even the Strictly Come Dancing final. Whatever you feel will best resonate with your audience. Be imaginative, be topical. See what’s happening at the quirkier end of the news. I believe Talk Like a Pirate Day is coming up 19th September for instance. Gaargh. It be.

Think themed pictures, think ideas for gifts, think who’s going to win?, think how are you celebrating? Your audience may already be talking about it, so get involved in the conversation.
