As Breedlove and Bedell look to the future, both companies aim to compliment the artistic process of handcrafting instruments with scientific information about the use of woods and their specific properties, and to identify the processes that increase wood yield. Justin Morris has joined the Two Old Hippies team to lead revolutionize the way Breedlove and Bedell Guitars deliver specific tonal properties in their instruments, as well as refine and optimize wood-yield management.
A professional MI sound engineer, Justin is not only an expert in guitar manufacturing, but also in scientifically crafting tone. With 10 years of experience in the MI industry, and extensive expertise in the hands-on MI engineering of guitars, Justin has mastered the use of technology in ways that preserve organic-handmade qualities while providing a more consistent product.
At Bedell and Breedlove, Justin will research the structure and vibrational behavior of wood to develop repeatable testing methods that will aid in wood selection and provide the desired overall tone in the finished instrument. Guitar players often have a specific tone in mind, and Jason will assist the luthiers at Bedell and Breedlove to scientifically determine, in advance, the sound profile of purpose-built instruments before cutting a top or bending a side. Justin’s research will also extend into guitar design and manufacturing. He will gather data on minor and substantial changes in guitar construction and factor this into vibrational-behavior data to provide both the tone and projection that the player desires.
ABOUT JUSTIN
Justin has extensive experience developing and implementing new product development programs and manufacturing engineering documentation, testing and quality programs for a major guitar manufacturer. As a design engineer, he’s worked on some of the world’s most high-tech, as well as low-tech guitars and was also the “virtual luthier” for the Adult Swim TV show, Metalocalypse. Justin continues to learn every day, through work and personal activities. On days off he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family. His passions include photography, robotics and all things guitars.
