Luna Guitars introduces the Mo’o Lizard 17 Key Kalimba, which pays tribute to the roots of African music while celebrating the tranquility of Hawaiian island life. Tuned in the key of C, the flat-base kalimba offers an all-solid wood body with eye-catching artistry in the form of a unique laser-etching. With the Mo’o Lizard 17 Key Kalimba, players have a unique, affordable, and high-quality instrument to test new creative waters.
Kalimba-style instruments evolved from the mbira family of percussive instruments, which originates thousands of years ago in Zimbabwe. The kalimba has played a variety of musical roles throughout history, with deep roots that trace back to African culture and traditions. The kalimba is a frequent topic of discussion in music therapy, as the instrument has been studied for its therapeutic mental health and anxiety-reducing benefits. Typically, the kalimba’s overall vibe is one of relaxation and freedom from the stresses of everyday life. The standard C-tuning sounds pleasant and feels familiar, helping beginners learn the instrument.
Honoring tradition and bringing its own cultural flair, the Mo’o Lizard 17 Key Kalimba is made of okoume wood, originating from Africa, while incorporating “mo’o,” meaning lizard, in Hawaiian. To the early Hawaiians, mo’o was a symbol of spirituality and good fortune. The Mo’o Lizard on Luna’s kalimba is laser-etched and set against the leaves of the Monstera Deliciosa, an evergreen plant found throughout Hawaii.
The Mo’o Lizard 17 Key Kalimba arrives packaged with an instruction booklet for reference and a tuning hammer. Simply hit on top of the key to lower the pitch of a note or hit below the key to raise the pitch. The package also includes a polishing cloth and an extra soft carrying bag for protection, along with a gig bag with strap for portability, so players can take their kalimba on their next musical journey.
