NAMM 2016: Nord reveals new Virtual Hammer Technology

Ronnie Dungan • MMR Global • January 19, 2016

The new Nord 3 stage piano features new Virtual Hammer Action technology, which mimics the feel of a grand piano.

The Triple Sensor keybed allows key movements to be determined with greater precision to produce a new note without lifting the key completely. This allows for smoother repetitions as the tone is not completely dampened between the strokes, similar to a grand piano.

The new keyboard technology makes both top and bottom triggering possible, resulting in better control when playing percussively as well as pianissimo with the keys half-pressed down.

It also enables velocity sensitive release, dynamically dampening the sound based on how quickly you release the key.

The keybed has added weight for improved dynamic control and features a textured “ivory” surface, providing authentic Piano touch and feel.  The individual Fatar keybeds are meticulously calibrated at the Nord factory to ensure an even response over the whole range.

in addition, it features 1 GB of memory dedicated to sounds from the Nord Piano Library.

The Factory Bank features six Grand Pianos, five Upright Pianos, 11 Electric Pianos, Clavinet and Harpsichords. The Sample Synth section in the Nord Piano 3 has 256 MB memory dedicated to the Nord Sample Library 2.0.

It also features a new triple sensor keybed with Ivory touch and improved grand weighted action (A-C) and weighs in at 18.2 kg (40.7 lb) and measures 1287 mm (50.7″), 121 mm (4.8″), 340 mm (13.4″).

It is due to arrive in the UK in May 2016, through Sound Technology, with pricing to be announced.
