Finnish jazz artist Jukka Haavisto’s upcoming record, Juniper Path, intertwines Finno‑Ugric melodic motifs with the improvisational language of Nordic jazz and the groove‑centric feel of African‑American jazz fusion. The blend, highlighted by No Treble, aims to transport listeners through a soundscape that honors both regional folk roots and contemporary jazz expressions.
Haavisto cites the pioneering work of Jaco Pastorius, the Finnish composer Toivo Kärki, and the legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter as key inspirations shaping the album’s direction. Central to the project are the symbols of the juniper tree, representing continuity and a distinctly Finnish mindset, and the concept of löyly—the steam and heat of a sauna—evoking alternating moments of energy and calm. He is supported by the Löyly Syndicate, featuring Vili Itäpelto on electric piano and synths and guitarist Ville‑Veikko Airaniemi, while Haavisto’s singing fretless bass delivers many of the melodic lines with nuanced techniques.
