KMC Music Named Exclusive Distributor for Hiwatt, Park and WEM in U.S.

KMC Music is excited to be named the Exclusive Distributor for Hiwatt, Park, and WEM in the U.S., offering musicians the chance to experience these iconic brands.

Britampco continues a legacy of handcrafting amplifiers, pedals, and speaker cabinets in England since the 1960s, providing professional-level equipment for modern musicians while also appealing to classic amplifier enthusiasts.

“It’s an honor to lead the charge for Britampco in the U.S.,” said Kevin Drury, merchandising manager, KMC Music. “Hiwatt, Park, and WEM are legendary, and we’re excited to introduce their tone and craftsmanship to a new generation.”

Hiwatt amps are known for their high headroom, build quality, and versatility, making them ideal for both studio and live performances. They are key in creating diverse tones across rock, country, metal, and blues, and have been used by iconic artists on major stages.

“We’re thrilled to partner with and make these iconic brands accessible for musicians, helping them achieve vintage tone with the reliability of modern craftsmanship,” said James Tsaptsinos, VP Global MI/Pro Sales, JAM Industries.

Park amplifiers, famous for their hand-wired build quality, reshaped 60s and 70s rock music, and rare Park pedals like the ‘Fuzz Sound’ are highly sought after.

“We want players to be ‘blown away’ by the sound of a Park Amp, just as so many greats were in the early days of Bletchley, England,” said Alex Bak, director of Britampco.

WEM, pioneers of early PA systems with unique grill cloth and ‘tadpole’ piping, were widely used by musicians in the 60s and 70s. Their cabinets, famously paired with Fane Loudspeakers, are responsible for some of the most iconic guitar tones of all time.

Triumph & Trajectory: The 2025 Pearl River Kayserburg International Youth Piano Competition

Now in its 42nd year, the Pearl River Kayserburg International Youth Piano Competition continues to foster young musical talent worldwide with a new format, a distinguished advisory council, and hundreds of regional stages culminating in the International Grand Final in Xiamen, China.

A global pipeline for rising talent

The competition’s footprint is extensive, with over 200 domestic and international sub-competition zones, and its impact is cumulative, with more than one million contestants participating on a Kayserburg stage throughout its history. That scale is intentional: discover, encourage, and elevate outstanding musical talent while fostering international exchange through music.

Preliminaries for 2025 began in March, spanning multiple countries and regions to select finalists for the autumn finale in China.

What’s new in 2025

Organizers describe this year’s format as “breaking boundaries,” featuring a prestigious jury, more in-depth artistic guidance, and richer experiences for participants, creating an intentional evolution to expand the stage and focus the spotlight.

Categories span four main groupings (Student, Duet/Ensemble, College, and Open), subdivided into 10 divisions. Rounds include Preliminary, Semi-final, and Grand Final (two rounds for College and Open). Together, the structure creates a fair ladder for ages and levels, while repertoire breadth tests musicianship, technique, and expression across periods and styles.

Repertoire requirements at the international Grand Final emphasize range and depth: an etude from a choice of Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, or Ligeti, a Classical-era sonata movement (Haydn/Mozart/Beethoven/Schubert), and additional free-choice works which are memorized and from contrasting composers.

Regional Spotlights:

Singapore: On August 16, the Singapore Regional Finals winnowed an initial pool of 400+ entrants down to 100 finalists. The event crowned category winners and named Student Category Top Prize winner Pan Jiarong Oscar to represent Singapore at the International Grand Finals in Xiamen.

Vietnam: Vietnam’s finals culminated with an awards ceremony in Nha Trang, performed on the critically acclaimed Kayserburg GH275Z, underscoring Pearl River’s commitment to providing high-caliber instruments at every level of the pathway.

The road to Xiamen

After regional events, selected winners proceed to a Preliminary Grand Final (online), with results slated by late August. The International Grand Final took place in Xiamen, China, from October 5th to 9th 2025.

Artistic leadership

The competition’s advisory and organizing leadership includes distinguished figures across China’s conservatories and performance circles — among them Ye Xiaogang, Liu Shikun, and Shi Shucheng as Artistic Advisors, with Wu Ying serving among the Organizing Committee Directors alongside Wei Danwen and Li Jianning.

In many regions, the competition is paired with masterclasses and concerts by noted artists and educators, providing young pianists with close contact with role models and expanding the cultural impact of each event beyond the stage.

D’Addario Foundation Awarded $10,000 NAMM Foundation Grant

The D’Addario Foundation announces that it has received a $10,000 grant from the NAMM Foundation to support the Immersive Music Challenge (IMC): an effort to improve awareness of the positive impacts of immersive music-based mentoring and support nonprofit organizations that provide free or affordable music instruction and mentoring within high-needs communities.

The grant will help support the IMC Implementation Study, a five-year research study, with NORC at the University of Chicago serving as the third-party evaluator. The study seeks to illustrate the impact that immersive music instruction and music-based mentoring can have on academic performance, especially literacy and grade-level reading, and social-emotional wellbeing of children from low-income communities.

Advancing Music Education Through Research and Partnership

“This contribution from the NAMM Foundation is a meaningful example of how investments in research can uncover data that demonstrates the power of music-based mentoring,” said Karen Shelley, executive director of the D’Addario Foundation.

Grant Highlights

The D’Addario Foundation received a $10,000 NAMM Foundation grant in support of its Immersive Music Challenge (IMC) Implementation Study.

Funds will directly support the IMC Implementation Study, a five-year research study, with NORC at the University of Chicago serving as the third-party evaluator, to examine how long-term music-based mentoring impacts academic achievement, especially literacy and grade-level reading, as well as social-emotional well-being among students attending high-poverty schools.

The project aims to demonstrate the transformative role of immersive music education in improving outcomes for youth from under-resourced communities.

Findings will help shape music-based mentoring programs and access to music education nationwide.

Marshall and Spinal Tap Reunite for the Loudest Amp Ever Made

Marshall and Spinal Tap II finally unite in a limited design collaboration that celebrates the absurdity, volume, and rock ’n’ roll of going too far (to 11 and Infinity) and loving it.

Built on the spirit of the JVM410H, this collaboration isn’t just loud — it’s louder than loud. Every detail in the panel nods to the amps that shaped a moment in rock history and the film that turned it into comedy gold.

THIS IS THE LOUDEST COLLAB EVER MADE. LITERALLY.

In 1984, This Is Spinal Tap made rock history, and Marshall was right there when guitarist Nigel Tufnel proudly declared, “These go to eleven.” That scene became part of pop culture forever, cementing Marshall’s place as the sound and the symbol of rock excess.

Now, four decades later, that moment comes full circle with the Spinal Tap JVM410H Limited Edition: an amp that finally turns the myth into metal.

“Marshall has always been part of Spinal Tap’s DNA, quite literally,” says Hugh Gilmartin, artist relations & marketing manager at Marshall. “It’s poetic to finally make the amp that fans have talked about for 40 years. It’s a celebration of sound, satire and everything that makes rock both ridiculous and great.”

The Spinal Tap JVM410H features custom panel artwork, renamed channels and controls that literally go beyond. All knobs go to 11, and the master volume reaches infinity. On the back, a bold Spinal Tap logo marks its legacy.

Only 20 units will exist worldwide and will be available for fans in the U.S. only. Eleven will be sold exclusively via Sweetwater’s Gear Exchange beginning on December 7, with all profits going to charities chosen by Spinal Tap: The Roots of Music & Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Inside the Mix: Taylor ‘Squid’ Veraldi Powers From Ashes to New’s Tour with Allen & Heath dLive

Taylor “Squid” Veraldi mixing front of house for From Ashes to New on a dLive S5000

Taylor “Squid” Veraldi started off in the studio world, until he got a taste of life on the road. “I did the first couple of tours for free – just to cut my teeth,” he recalled. “I’ve been touring ever since.”

Squid credits those early touring days with giving him the background knowledge needed to handle front of house for major artists. “I was working on every house console imaginable, so it taught me the workflow of each model from different manufacturers.”

After mixing and tour managing with groups like Alesana, Squid was asked to join the new crew of From Ashes to New in 2018. “I worked with one of their vocalists on a previous tour,” he noted. “So they reached out to me as they were looking for people.”

A few years later, the band began maxing out their digital console – and Squid sought out a better option. “I had mixed monitors for the band Nothing More that same year on a dLive S5000 and I immediately fell in love with it,” he recalled. “I loved the flexibility, it sounded amazing, and the user interface made things so easy.”

Squid specifically noted the surface customization options, advanced scene scope control, and the DYN8 dynamic EQ and multiband compressor as key factors for him. “The DYN8 was incredible at getting rid of cymbal bleed in all the mics,” he explained. “It also avoided any harshness in the vocals, similar to a de-esser.”

He also likes that all the system’s processing happens in the MixRack, meaning that trouble at front of house doesn’t stop the show. “I once lost power at FOH and I was worried that the show was dead,” he recalled. “Thankfully, all the audio kept passing and I had time to get my surface powered back up and start making adjustments again.”

Once it was clear that dLive was the platform the band needed, they purchased a dual-screen S5000 surface for front of house, a compact 12-fader C1500 surface for monitor mixing and playback, and a DM64 MixRack as the main processing engine for the system. “We didn’t have a true monitor engineer yet,” he explained. “So the C1500 was also sometimes used for fly dates if we needed a more compact rig at front of house.”

For the next upgrade, the band is looking at purchasing an additional DM0 mix engine with RackUltra FX built-in, doubling their processing power and opening up innovative new FX like saturators, harmonizers, amp simulation, and more. “I got to try the RackUltra FX with Ice Nine Kills and it was amazing,” said Squid. “The additional MixRack also gives us more busses for more routing flexibility and front fills.”

Mixing From Ashes to New offers some unique challenges for Squid, mainly due to the band’s wide dynamics. “I deal with delay throws, filter vocals, screaming, snare bombs, and complex guitar panning” he explained. “I used to do a lot of that manually on the fly – but now I use dLive’s actions and SoftKeys to automate a lot of the work.”

For dealing with build-up in a mix, Squid has learned that most engineers’ reflex is to look in the wrong place. “Instead of chasing the build-up where it seems to be the harshest, I try to remove those frequencies from the channels that don’t need it,” he explained. “For example, I don’t need a ton of 4k in my synths or cymbals – so I just remove those problem frequencies from the channels where it doesn’t need to exist; because it’s just going to build up and layer from there. If I don’t have space for a particular instrument, I start looking for other channels that I can EQ to create space for it.”

Trade Regrets

Ken Parker, legendary luthier and founder of Parker Guitars, passed away peacefully at his home on October 5, 2025 after a long, hard fought battle with cancer.

Reflecting on his career, Parker stated, “Throughout my life, I’ve done something that I love and am proud of – making guitars that advance the art, science, and craft of building far beyond traditional methods. Most importantly, it has been a true joy and especially gratifying experience to see my guitars in the hands of all of you gifted and aspiring players, and I thank you for that opportunity.”

Parker Guitars was founded in 1993 as a vehicle to enable the production, sales, and marketing of what was to become the trendsetting Parker Fly guitar, created by Parker. Utilizing a unique lightweight composite exoskeleton construction technique and an expanded sonic palette enabled through the addition of piezoelectric pickups, the Fly set Parker apart from the pack.

Around 30,000 Parker guitars were crafted in the original Massachusetts factory before the company was purchased by US Music in 2003. An expanded range of instruments were brought to market in this period, extending upon the original Parker Fly, Nitefly, and Fly Bass designs forged from Ken’s groundbreaking approach to guitar building.

“The entire industry mourns the loss of this great visionary. We encourage guitar builders all over the world to continue to honor his innovations and raise the bar he so kindly started,” said James Tsaptsinos, VP of Global Sales, JAM Music Group.
