CHAUVET Professional fixtures illuminated recent Flo Rida performances in Montreal and Quebec City. Lighting designer Gil Perron utilized a rig comprising Rogue Outcast BeamWash, Maverick Force 3 Profile, COLORado 1 Quad and COLORado PXL Bar 16 units for the shows. The performances took place Saturday, June 27 at the Strangers in the Night Gala at the Videotron Centre and a subsequent show at Quebec City’s Videotron Center arena.
Along with the thunderous bass lines that reverberated throughout the building, the atmosphere was electrified by color changes. Perron designed the lighting to match the artist’s Miami roots. Flo-Rida is the quintessential 305 artist, and that means his shows are all about warm colors, and vivid hues, Perron said. That motivated me to use the Quadratic Color Wheel. Iwent with two opposing sets of complementary colors, one color per instrument type.
The strategy resulted in seamless color changes that appeared to put the stage in motion. Perron noted the fixtures produce great whites and colors, are extraordinarily bright and have great coverage. When you have a hip-hop artist like Flo Rida running all over the stage, coverage is everything, Perron said.
Meticulous strobing by board operator Fahed Hammami from LSM contributed to the stage dynamics. We got more energy by strobing at selective moments, Perron said. Hammami programmed several layered chases on his ChamSys MQ500 which he could apply to his fixture groups.
Perron and his collaborators varied light angles to change eye level. We realized that because of the higher trim potential we could push truss angles quite a lot, such as by opposing 10 degrees for mid and upstage truss, Perron said. The results were beyond expectations. Production directors Fakhri Ben Mariem and Olivia Cosentini were also invaluable. Master electricians Ryan Germundson and Penelope Tremblay assisted with the design.
