Show Imaging deployed a JBL Professional VTX system built around the VTX B35 cardioid subwoofer for the Big Mountain Stage at the Under the Big Sky Festival in Whitefish, Montana, according to information released by JBL Professional.
The outdoor stage was constructed on a working ranch and faced an approximately 350-foot audience area with more than 30 feet of elevation change. Site restrictions prevented the use of delay towers, while nearby homes and county noise requirements made low-frequency control an important part of the system design.
The system used VTX A12 and A12W line arrays with flown VTX B35 subwoofers. Ground-stacked VTX B28 subwoofers, VTX A8 loudspeakers for front-fill and outfill coverage, VTX M22 stage monitors and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers completed the deployment.
The VTX B35 incorporates cardioid operation within the enclosure, eliminating the rear-facing cabinets and additional amplifier channels commonly required by a conventional cardioid array. Show Imaging said that approach reduced wiring, rigging and setup complexity while directing more low-frequency energy toward the audience and less behind the stage.
For pro-audio dealers and system integrators, the deployment illustrates the operational value of an integrated-cardioid product in outdoor venues where labor, hang weight, amplifier inventory and neighborhood noise limits must all be considered during system design.
