2021 marks the historic 125th anniversary of the iconic Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica. Interestingly, this milestone also commemorates one of the very first examples of a production musical instrument bearing a celebrity endorsement. Matthias Hohner, recognizing an opportunity to partner with John Philip Sousa and his popular Marine Band, secured the agreement to release the harmonica bearing the Marine Band name in 1896. Perhaps the longest running serial production instrument in history, The Marine Band 1896 has seen very few changes to the original design over the years. Sousa’s image remains on the case to this day.
Used in all forms of popular music since the 19th Century, the Marine Band’s impact on popular music throughout generations cannot be understated. Hohner artist, educator, historian and master harmonica customizer, Joe Filisko calls it “the original iPod” noting that it gave you “a million songs in your pocket.” The Marine Band’s versatility contributed to its success, introducing millions to music and forging thousands of musical careers.
While originally intended for traditional music and folk songs, the harmonica (and the Marine Band in particular) helped define Blues music. Once players like Little Walter, Sonny Terry and many more discovered the expressiveness and developed a technique known as “bending,” the harmonica became a ubiquitous voice in contemporary music.
Hohner is celebrating this important anniversary with the introduction of two commemorative models. Each harkens back to original design elements with “mouse-ear” tabs and the pre-war badge with the six-sided star. The pearwood comb has also been lacquered in the original orange and black coloring for a distinctive, classic look. The engraved medallions on the bottom cover plate signify recognition given to Hohner for outstanding quality, each representing an award received by Matthias Hohner at various exhibitions in the late 1800s.
The Premier Commemorative Model is limited to 125 pieces worldwide and is individually serialized. This instrument features gold-plated coverplates as well as the original artwork and patent drawings in gold foil in a special presentation box.
The Replica Commemorative Model includes the original-style cardboard case that is coveted by collectors. It will be available in two retail-friendly packaging options: standard individual harmonicas which can be hung on pegboard or slatwall and a vintage-inspired pre-loaded wooden counter-top display which houses 12 of this special edition harmonica.
