We were treated to a preview, of sorts, of an exhibit about the formative years of C.F. Martin Co. at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Sunday Jan. 12 when CBS Sunday Morning aired a segment on singer-songwriter John Sebastian.
The profile of Sebastian, who with The Lovin’ Spoonful has seven Top 10 songs in 1965-66, included a walk-through of the exhibit, “Early American Guitars: The Instruments of C.F. Martin.”
Sebastian was filmed for the segment playing some of the 35 historic guitars in the exhibit, which traces the birth of the American guitar by shedding light on the contributions of C.F. Martin & Co. founder Christian Frederick Martin.
The exhibit opens Jan. 14 and runs through Dec. 7. It contains the largest collection of instruments by Martin ever displayed publicly: 35 guitars from the Martin Museum in Nazareth, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and several private collections.
