SOMA Laboratory has begun shipping Instrument X, a new synthesizer platform that utilizes neural acoustic modeling to revolutionize sound creation, according to Recording Magazine. This innovative technology replaces conventional sample libraries with a system that generates sound directly from notation, offering users a level of control previously unattainable.
Instead of relying on pre-recorded loops, Instrument X translates musical notation into simulated sound-wave radiation, allowing composers and producers to manipulate aspects like bow movement, breath control, and key articulation. The software incorporates up to eleven simultaneous microphone feeds, encompassing close-mic perspectives, Decca tree configurations, and room ambience, to achieve a realistic spatial depth. Dreamtonics' proprietary algorithm addresses challenges in maintaining sonic consistency across numerous channels by accounting for the studio’s acoustic environment.
Instrument X operates locally on a standard laptop, eliminating the need for an internet connection or specialized graphics card. Features include a unified articulation editor for managing performance techniques and a dynamics lane that automatically adjusts timbre and harmonic saturation to mimic a real instrumentalist's physical playing. Users can also combine diverse articulations on individual notes to produce complex sonic textures.
