JAG Hotel in St. John’s, Newfoundland, has integrated a premium audio system to establish sound as a central element of its guest experience rather than an afterthought. According to AVNetwork, owner John Steele guided the initiative to ensure audio quality defines the property’s identity, leading to the selection of Genelec products for the expansion.
AVNetwork reports that the project involved installing 71 Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers across the hotel’s top three floors, including the Mojo Lounge. To address challenges regarding long distances from the main control room and tight deadlines, integrator SFM utilized Power over Ethernet technology. This approach allowed the team to power and network the system using single cables, avoiding extensive new infrastructure while maintaining the lounge’s high-end decor.
The installation features fifty discreet 4435 in-ceiling models for general coverage and twenty-one surface-mounted 4430 units in the cocktail bar. AVNetwork notes that the design team intentionally displayed the wall-mounted speakers to complement the aesthetic and signal a commitment to high-fidelity audio. Property manager Shawn Basha told AVNetwork that the hotel avoids background music in favor of foreground sound that actively shapes the atmosphere and brand identity.
