The Georgia State University School of Music is introducing a new Master of Music in Collaborative Piano, a two-year curriculum scheduled to welcome its first students in spring 2027. According to Georgia State News Hub, lecturer Taylor Flowers, who joined the faculty this fall, will direct the program. Flowers defines a collaborative pianist as a musical partner who offers a distinct artistic perspective rather than merely accompanying singers or instrumentalists.
Julia Bullard, director of the School of Music, stated that the degree provides applied study and ensemble training under Flowers’ leadership. The 36-credit program focuses on private repertoire study, vocal coaching pedagogy, and lyric diction in major operatic languages. Students will gain practical experience by coaching graduate singers and performing in recitals and showcases. The curriculum also includes creating a digital portfolio to develop professional skills like self-promotion and interview preparation.
Flowers highlighted Atlanta’s robust arts scene and faculty connections to regional companies as key benefits for employment pipelines. External graduate assistantships will place students in paid roles across metro Atlanta organizations. Admission requires an audition, a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, and demonstrated sight-reading and language abilities. Pre-screening video reviews begin December 1, with live auditions following for selected candidates.
