Guitar Center has removed numerous entries from its Open For Legends competition after the submission portal was flooded with political memes and messages supporting Palestine. According to Guitar.com, the retailer launched the contest on September 14, the same day rapper Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. Following Macklemore’s removal, all other support acts withdrew in solidarity, leaving Sheeran in need of new opening performers. This mass withdrawal included Sheeran’s own backing band, creating a significant void in the tour lineup that the competition was intended to help fill.
Guitar.com reports that internet users utilized the contest’s public voting system to submit entries criticizing Sheeran rather than showcasing musical talent. Entertainment Weekly noted the submission site was overwhelmed with pro-Palestine content, overshadowing legitimate applications from musicians. In response, Guitar Center told Entertainment Weekly that it received entries that were not legitimate applications and confirmed those submissions would not be considered. The retailer stated the competition series was developed months ago to create opportunities for artists to perform on major stages alongside various artists. Guitar Center emphasized its commitment to supporting musicians at every stage of their journey. The company affirmed it is continuing to review and manage the program according to its intended purpose to ensure the opportunity remains focused on talented musicians seeking to showcase their skills alongside established artists.
