Kenny Chesney’s touring monitor engineers use JH Audio Layla and Roxanne in-ear monitors to maintain separate mixes for the artist and his band, according to information released by JH Audio.
Phil “SidePhill” Robinson handles Chesney’s mix and guest performers, while Bryan “Opie” Baxley mixes the band. The engineers said the division became increasingly important as the production moved into stadiums with long stage thrusts, where isolation and consistent monitoring must be maintained as performers move closer to the audience.
Chesney has used custom-molded Layla monitors since 2018. JH Audio modified his units to accept a two-pin cable, reducing cable weight for performances. Baxley and the band use Roxanne monitors, which the engineer said provide the frequency separation needed to hear mix changes without reducing detail.
The engineers’ current workflow follows nearly two decades of using JH Audio products. Their deployment now supports productions ranging from smaller venues to stadiums and the Sphere in Las Vegas.
For music retailers and touring-audio suppliers, the application highlights the service component of premium in-ear monitoring. Product selection, custom scanning and fitting, cable configuration and continuing technical support can be as important to a touring customer as the monitor’s published specifications.
