Lighting designer Gregory “Gru” Dutein has been providing lighting design and programming for the musical act Ultra Vomit since 2017. According to ChamSys, Dutein’s work supports the band's performances, which feature elements of comedy and spontaneous creation.
Dutein relies on a ChamSys MagicQ MQ70 Compact Console to manage the complex lighting requirements of Ultra Vomit's live shows. He previously employed a ChamSys MQ80 console for his work. The designer leverages several console features to maintain control during the performances.
Specific techniques utilized by Dutein include Fan Mode and Subselect to precisely place fixtures along the X-axis, and Offset Patch to expedite the programming of locations. He also employs Expand Palette for manipulating color and beam shapes, and organizes show files using color-coded tags within the patch. The band’s performances are synchronized to a click track, which includes some pre-set sequences.
Furthermore, Dutein incorporates Group Cues, Morphing, and Custom Macros into his workflow to streamline the lighting process.
