According to Jon Sykes, bassist for The Pineapple Thief, his introduction to impactful bass playing came through the music of Living Colour. Sykes noted that 1989, the year he began playing bass, also marked the release of Living Colour's *Vivid*.
Sykes recalled watching Living Colour’s music videos and live performances on a UK-based television program called *The Power Hour*, which aired overnight and was recorded by him and his friends. He specifically remembered the video for “Open Letter To A Landlord” and the profound effect it had on him.
Sykes was particularly impressed by the bass riff’s prominent role in the song's arrangement and the way it propelled the music forward. He also highlighted the interplay between Vernon Reid’s guitar lines, Will Calhoun’s drumming, and Muzz Skillings’ bass playing. Sykes stated he listened to Living Colour’s early albums extensively and hopes some of their style may have influenced his own playing.
The Pineapple Thief’s *Far and Wide* album is scheduled for release on October 9.
