The Popular Music department at the University of Northampton is incorporating spatial audio technology into its educational offerings, blending established recording techniques with innovative research. According to Audient, the institution's music program combines conventional recording methods with explorations into immersive audio environments.
Dr. Stace Constantinou, who directs the Popular Music and Music Production degree programs, is spearheading the spatial audio initiatives. He utilizes Audient's ORIA interface to facilitate his research, which is examining diverse speaker configurations and approaches to live spatial mixing. The impetus for this research stemmed from observations made at a recent music festival.
The university’s primary recording space is equipped with an Audient ASP8024 mixing console, which students employ alongside industry-standard Pro Tools software. A range of monitoring solutions, including PMC SX-Pro speakers, PMC Result 6 speakers, and customized Auratone speakers, are also available. Audient iD4 and iD44 interfaces assist students with both recording and playback processes.
