Audio Damage has announced the arrival of AD-202, a new monosynth designed to emulate the classic sound of the Roland MC-202, originally released in 1983. According to Synthtopia, the instrument aims to recreate the character of its predecessor while adding modern features.

The AD-202 incorporates a single voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that provides saw, pulse, sub, and noise waveforms. It also includes a 24 dB ladder filter and a single envelope generator, all with controls accessible directly on the front panel. Synthtopia reports that the new instrument builds upon the original design with expanded capabilities.

Notably, the AD-202 offers eight-voice polyphony, a significant enhancement over the original. The instrument also presents per-voice analog drift and a low-frequency oscillator that can be synchronized to the tempo. Furthermore, the AD-202 provides support for microtuning using MPE and MTS-ESP, and includes a “color” section for added sonic textures. This section provides saturation, filter drive, and distortion effects, positioned after the VCO but before the VCA.

The AD-202 is currently available for Linux, Mac, and Windows systems, with an iOS version also accessible. The introductory price is set at $39 USD, a reduction from its regular price of $49. The iOS version is priced at $4.99.
